BTT tokens explained

What are BTT tokens?

BTT token, or BitTorrent token is a cryptocurrency launched by the developers of BitTorrent peer-to-peer protocol. It is one of the most common protocols for transferring large files in a peer-to-peer network. Despite the popularity of the service, BitTorrent team was not able to properly monetize it. This is why BitTorrent was acquired by the Tron Foundation, creators of the Tron blockchain, in 2019. The result of this partnership is the creation of a completely new cryptocurrency - BTT. The goal of the project is to improve the BitTorrent protocol and provide incentives to the network’s participants.

Following the December 2021 upgrade, there are now three versions of the BTT cryptocurrency: BTTOLD, BTT, and BTTC. A more detailed information about it could be found here.

BTTOLD

BTTOLD is the old BTT token that was used before the upgrade. BTTOLD is a TRC10 token, powered by Tron. It's been in use since 2019 until 2021. It was eventually decided to upgrade the token to a faster blockchain. It is done to allow for more large-scale decentralized applications.

BTTOLD will still be available in Atomic Wallet, but we strongly recommend you swap it to the new BTT token using How do I swap my BTT?. The swap rate is BTTOLD 1:1000 BTT.

Note: Since BTTOLD is a Tron-based token, you'll need 10 TRX to send or swap BTTOLD.

BTT (new)

BTT is the new BTT token based on the Tron network. It was migrated to a new contract is now a TRC20 token. The TRC20 tokens allow for more features than the TRC10 tokens do. Also, TRC20 tokens have a higher energy & bandwidth capacity, in comparison to TRC10 tokens. A more detailed breakdown of the difference between TRC10 and TRC20 tokens could be found here.

This version of the token is already supported by Atomic Wallet, and it'll also become available for staking soon.

Note: Since BTT is a Tron-based token, you'll need 10 TRX to send BTT.

BTTC (new)

BTTC is the second new asset. Unlike BTT, it's actually a coin based on its own blockchain. It's an entirely new blockchain that will allow for even more scalability and efficiency.

BTTC will become available in Atomic Wallet in 2022.
