How to Activate an Inactive GRAM (TON) Wallet in Atomic Wallet

On the TON (The Open Network) blockchain, a wallet address needs to be activated before it can send funds. If your wallet is new or has never sent a transaction, it may be inactive — and you might notice that you can't send GRAM (formerly Toncoin), or that USDT on TON isn't accessible yet. This guide explains why this happens and how to activate your wallet.

A note on the name: The native token of The Open Network was renamed from Toncoin (TON) to Gram (GRAM) in June 2026. This was a name and ticker change only — the blockchain is still called The Open Network (TON), and your balances, addresses, and holdings are unchanged. No swap, migration, or claim is needed. Anyone asking you to "claim" or "migrate" GRAM is a scammer. You may still see it labeled as TON or Toncoin in some places while platforms update.

Why a TON wallet can be inactive

On the TON blockchain, every wallet is actually a smart contract. Before your wallet can send transactions, that contract must be deployed on-chain — this is what "activation" means. A wallet is typically inactive when:

  • It's brand new and has never received or sent any funds.
  • It has received funds but has never sent a transaction, so the contract hasn't been deployed yet.
  • Its balance is too low to cover network fees for an outgoing transaction.

Your funds are safe: An inactive address does not mean your funds are lost. Any GRAM or USDT sent to your address is safely stored on the blockchain — activation simply enables your wallet to send transactions from it.

How to activate your TON wallet

A TON address is activated by making an outgoing transaction from it. This deploys your wallet contract on-chain, and it only needs to happen once — after that, your wallet works normally.

  1. Make sure you have some GRAM on your address. You need a small amount of GRAM (the native coin of the TON network, formerly TON) to cover the network fee for the outgoing transaction. If your balance is zero, send a small amount of GRAM to your Atomic Wallet TON address first.
  2. Send a small amount of GRAM from your address to any other TON address. Making this outgoing transaction is what activates your address. You can send to any valid TON address — for example, another wallet you control.
  3. Wait for confirmation. Once the outgoing transaction is confirmed on the blockchain, your address is active.
  4. Done. After activation, you'll be able to send GRAM and other TON-based assets — including USDT on TON — normally.

Note: Network fees on TON are charged by the blockchain itself, not by Atomic Wallet. Activation happens automatically as part of your first outgoing transaction — there's no separate activation button or fee.

Why USDT on TON needs an active wallet

USDT on the TON network is a Jetton — a token managed by its own smart contract that is linked to your main TON wallet. Because of how TON works, your main TON wallet needs to be active before you can send USDT (or other Jettons) from it.

If you've received USDT on TON but can't send it yet, the usual reason is that your underlying TON address hasn't been activated. To resolve this:

  1. Make sure you have a small amount of GRAM (not just USDT) on your address. Jetton transfers require GRAM to cover network fees, and you need it to make the activating outgoing transaction.
  2. Activate your address by sending a small amount of GRAM to any other TON address, as described above.
  3. Once your address is active, you'll be able to send your USDT on TON normally.

Keep some GRAM on hand: Even after activation, every USDT (Jetton) transaction on TON requires a small amount of GRAM to cover the network fee. Always keep a little GRAM on your address so you can move your USDT when you need to.

What Atomic Wallet can and cannot do

  • Help you troubleshoot activation and display issues within the app.
  • Guide you on keeping enough GRAM available for activation and Jetton fees.

Atomic Wallet cannot:

  • Waive or reduce the TON network's transaction fees — these are set by the TON blockchain.
  • Activate an address that has no GRAM to cover the outgoing transaction fee.
  • Recover funds sent to an incorrect address.
  • Access or move your funds. Your keys and backup phrase are known only to you.
