Troubleshooting: XMR Balance Not Displayed in Atomic Wallet

You may find that your Monero (XMR) balance is not showing correctly in Atomic Wallet — appearing as a dash ("—"), as zero, or simply not updating after a transaction. Because Monero is a privacy coin, its balance works differently from other assets, and a display issue almost never means your funds are lost. This guide explains the common causes and how to resolve them.

Reassurance first: Your XMR is stored on the blockchain, not in the app. A missing or incorrect balance is a display or synchronization issue, not a loss of funds. Monero is a private network, so the wallet must scan the blockchain to detect your balance — this can sometimes take time or fail to connect.

Why your XMR balance might not display

  • Node connection issues. A dash ("—") in the balance means the wallet can't connect to the Monero node/block explorer. Your funds are safe on-chain but aren't being reflected in the interface.
  • Deactivated address. An XMR address deactivates automatically if it hasn't been used (no deposits or withdrawals) for 30 days. A deactivated address won't reflect your balance properly.
  • Incomplete synchronization. Monero wallets must scan the blockchain block by block to detect your balance. If sync is incomplete, funds may not appear even after the transaction is confirmed.
  • Unstable connection. A weak or interrupted internet connection can prevent the wallet from staying synced with the Monero network.

A note on checking XMR on a block explorer: Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, you cannot look up a Monero balance by pasting your address into a public explorer — Monero is private by design. This is why verifying and rescanning XMR balances relies on your view key rather than a public address lookup.

If you see a dash ("—") in your balance

A dash means the wallet has temporarily lost its connection to the Monero node. Your funds are on the blockchain and are not affected.

  • Check that your internet connection is stable.
  • Close and reopen Atomic Wallet to re-establish the node connection.
  • Wait a short while and check again — node connectivity can recover on its own.

If your address was deactivated

If your XMR address hasn't been used for 30 days, it deactivates and stops reflecting your balance correctly. This is easy to fix:

  1. Open your XMR wallet in Atomic Wallet.
  2. Go to the Receive screen.
  3. Press the Activate button.

Once reactivated, your balance should display correctly again.

General synchronization steps

If your balance still isn't showing after checking the above, work through these steps:

  1. Check your internet connection. A stable connection is essential for the wallet to scan the Monero blockchain.
  2. Restart Atomic Wallet. Fully close and reopen the app to trigger re-synchronization.
  3. Update Atomic Wallet. Make sure you're running the latest version, as outdated versions can have sync issues.
  4. Allow time to sync. Monero synchronization can take longer than other coins because the wallet must scan the blockchain to detect your balance.

If you need to access your funds urgently

If the balance issue persists and you need to move your XMR right away, you can export your Monero keys and import them into another Monero wallet:

  1. Go to Settings → Private Keys.
  2. Select Monero. You'll see two lines — the first is your private view key, the second is your private spend key.
  3. Import both into another Monero wallet that supports private keys (for example, MyMonero).

Handle your keys carefully: Your private keys give full control of your XMR. Only enter them into a wallet you trust and have verified, never share them with anyone, and be aware that some third-party Monero services may charge a fee to scan your transaction history and display your balance.

Contacting support

If none of the steps above resolve the issue, contact Atomic Wallet support at support@atomicwallet.io. To help us investigate and manually rescan the blockchain for your balance, please provide:

  • Your XMR address.
  • Your XMR view key (this allows us to rescan and view your balance — it does not allow spending your funds).
  • A description of the issue and when it started.
  • The transaction ID (TxID) of any deposit you're expecting, if you have it.

View key vs. spend key: To rescan your balance, support only needs your view key — which lets us see, but never move, your funds. Never share your spend key or your 12-word backup phrase with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

What Atomic Wallet can and cannot do

Atomic Wallet can:

  • Help troubleshoot XMR display and synchronization issues within the app.
  • Manually rescan the blockchain for your balance using your address and view key.
  • Guide you on reactivating a deactivated XMR address.
  • Guide you on exporting your keys if you need urgent access to your funds.

Atomic Wallet cannot:

  • Directly change your XMR balance on the blockchain — your funds are secured on-chain.
  • Recover funds sent to an incorrect address.
  • Reverse confirmed Monero transactions.
  • Access or move your funds. Your spend key and backup phrase are known only to you.
