How to Recover Funds from a Failed or Unconfirmed Transaction
When you send cryptocurrency, your transaction is processed on a blockchain network. Sometimes a transaction doesn't go through as expected and appears as "failed" or "unconfirmed," which can raise concern that your funds are lost. In most failed transactions, your funds are not truly lost — they are either returned to your wallet or never leave it, minus any network fees. True loss usually only happens when funds are sent to an incorrect or unsupported address.

Why transactions fail or stay unconfirmed
- Insufficient network fees (gas). On networks like Ethereum, if your fee is too low, miners may not pick up your transaction, or it may fail during congestion.
- Network congestion. High demand can slow processing, leaving transactions pending or failing if they time out.
- Incorrect recipient address. Sending to an invalid address usually fails and returns funds to your wallet. Sending to a valid but incorrect address (someone else's wallet) is generally irreversible.
- Smart contract errors. When interacting with a dApp or smart contract, an error in the contract's logic can cause the transaction to fail.
- Nonce issues. A nonce is a sequential number for transactions from an address. If transactions are sent out of order or with a skipped nonce, they can get stuck or fail.
- Unsupported network. Sending a token to an address on a different, incompatible network (e.g., an ERC-20 token to a BNB Smart Chain address) can make funds inaccessible.
Step 1: Check the transaction status
Find your transaction ID (TxID or hash) in your Atomic Wallet history and copy it. Then go to the relevant block explorer for the coin you sent — for example, Etherscan for Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, BscScan for BNB Smart Chain, or Solscan for Solana. Paste your TxID into the search bar.
The explorer will show one of three statuses:
- Pending: the transaction is still waiting to be confirmed.
- Failed: the transaction did not go through.
- Success: the transaction was successfully processed and confirmed.
If the transaction is pending
Wait a reasonable amount of time — network congestion often clears within a few hours. If it remains pending for too long, it may eventually fail and return the funds to your wallet. Do not resend the same transaction while it is still pending.
If the transaction failed
In most cases, the principal amount is automatically returned to your Atomic Wallet balance. The network fee (gas) for a failed transaction is typically consumed and not refunded.
Check your wallet balance again. If the funds are not immediately visible, refresh your wallet or restart the application.
Note: A failed transaction means your principal is safe — only the gas fee is lost. If the balance doesn't update right away, it's a display delay, not a loss. See our guide on balance display issues if it persists.
If it shows success but the recipient didn't get the funds
If the block explorer shows "Success," the funds left your wallet and arrived at the recipient address on the blockchain.
- Contact the recipient. They may have an issue on their end — for example, their wallet isn't syncing, or they provided the wrong address for their specific service.
- Verify the address. Double-check that the address you sent to exactly matches the one the recipient provided. If you sent to a valid but incorrect address, the funds are generally unrecoverable.
If funds were sent to the wrong address or network
If you sent funds to an incorrect address belonging to someone else, or to an address on an unsupported network, these transactions are generally irreversible due to the immutable nature of the blockchain. There is no central authority that can reverse or recall them.
Beware of recovery scams: No company, service, or individual can recover funds sent to a wrong address or unsupported network. Anyone — including someone claiming to represent Atomic Wallet — who offers to recover your funds for a fee is a scammer. Never share your 12-word backup phrase or send an upfront payment.
What Atomic Wallet can and cannot do
Atomic Wallet can:
- Provide a secure, non-custodial wallet for managing your cryptocurrencies.
- Display your transaction history and transaction IDs (hashes).
- Help you troubleshoot issues related to the wallet application itself.
Atomic Wallet cannot:
- Recover funds sent to incorrect addresses or unsupported networks.
- Reverse, cancel, or speed up blockchain transactions once they are broadcast.
- Influence network congestion or refund consumed network fees (gas).
- Access or control your funds, as it is a non-custodial wallet — you hold your private keys.
- Be held responsible for funds lost due to user error, such as sending to the wrong address or setting insufficient gas fees.
